Tutorial #3 - Kristen Bell

Tutorial requested by [info]bluegoth.

Go from this: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting to this: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This tutorial was made using PS7. It uses selective color so it’s not transferable to PSP. Sorry.

1. Once you’ve cropped and reduce the size of your icon to 100x100pixels, take your base, duplicate it and set to screen 100%.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

2. Flatten.

3. Go to Image - Adjustments - Variations - More Yellow once and More Red once.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

4. Now, create a new selective color layer(Image – Adjustments – Selective color).
Red
Cyan: -100
Magenta: 0
Yellow: +100
Black: 0

Yellow

Yellow: +100
Black: 0

Neutral

Magenta: 0
Yellow: -35
Black: 0

5. Create another new selective color layer.

That icon is beautiful.

I just tried the tutorial, and i was wondering if on the first selective colour -> neutral, is the yellow meant to be a - instead of a +? When i did it as a +, the icon came out green, but when i did it as a - it came out with the blue like in your icon.

Either way it still comes out looking gorgeous.

Pretty Bomb Sara! Totally adding this to my memories! Oh and you know what kind of tutorial I would love? One that includes textures. You know that I have many textures but I could never really blend it well you know? :D Just wondering!

October 25 2006, 23:47:30 UTC 5 years ago

Thanks Ivy! I'm glad you like it! And I'll definitely try to do a tut with textures for you. Did you have a specific icon that uses a texture you want a tut of?

Selective colouring depends so much on the picture... This is the third tutorial I've tried for one single picture and I still can't figure out the right balance between colours :(

Image cropped :

hmm...I think the problem is that your pics is already fairly bright so you don't really need to screen it. Follow steps 3-4, and then flatten it. Then go to Image - Adjustments - Brightness/Contrast
Brightness: +10
Contrast: +15

Then go to Image - Adjustments – Hue/Saturation
Hue: 0
Saturation: +13

This is what I got:

Selective color is one of those things that takes a lot of fooling around. If you keep adjusting it, you're results will be even better.

Hopefully this helped. :)
